St. Lucie County is currently seeking volunteers to represent the low-income community by running for an elected position on the Treasure Coast Community Action Agency Advisory Board. The election will be held on Wednesday, March 31 at 5 p.m. in the Conference Room of the Community Services Department, 437 North 7th Street.

The election is for a representative of the low-income population to serve on the advisory board for a term of three years. The Treasure Coast Community Action Agency Advisory Board meets on a quarterly basis (January, April, July and October) and attendance is mandatory.  The representative selected serves on a voluntary basis with no compensation.  The representative need not be poor themselves, but will be chosen to represent this population in a democratic selection procedure by community residents.

The Treasure Coast Community Action Agency Advisory Board develops and oversees the Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) given to this area.  The State of Florida, Department of Community Affairs, receives these funds from the federal government and distributes them to Community Action Agencies throughout the state.  The Treasure Coast Community Action Agency is made up by Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee Counties. The St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners is the lead entity.  CSBG program funds are used to provide services to assist low-income families in attaining the skills, knowledge and motivation necessary to achieve self-sufficiency.  Assistance provided is indentified by each county based on community needs and may include prescription assistance, education funding, support for continued employment and other types of assistance as approved by the advisory board. The advisory board is composed of three members from each of the three counties.  The representation from each county is as follows:

  • One elected official currently holding office, or a designated representative
  • One representative of the low-income population chosen by a democratic selection procedure to assure that they are representative of the low-income in the area served
  • One representative of business, industry, labor, religious, welfare, or education interests in the county

To apply for a seat on Treasure Coast Community Action Agency Advisory Board, send a written resume to Director of Community Services Beth Ryder, 437 North 7th Street, Fort Pierce, Fla., 34950 no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24 in order to be placed on the election ballot.  Community residents wishing to vote can complete their ballot at that location. For more information please call the St. Lucie County Community Services Department at (772) 462-1777.
