St. Lucie County Featured On Nationally-Syndicated Children’s Show: Aqua Kids

St. Lucie County and the Smithsonian Marine Station will be featured on upcoming episodes of Aqua Kids – an award-winning, nationally-syndicated children’s educational show.

The cast and crew from Aqua Kids spent several days in late July tapes taping three different episodes in Fort Pierce. The 30-minute television show will feature:

  • St. Lucie County’s Artificial Reef Program on Saturday, Oct. 23
  • St. Lucie County’s Oyster Reef Restoration Project on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Aqua Kids airs locally on WFLX (Fox 29) on Saturdays at 8:30 a.m.

During their time in St. Lucie County, the Aqua Kids cast interviewed staff from the Smithsonian Marine Station, including Education Specialist Laura Diederick, and talked about the import research taking place in the Indian River Lagoon, as well as the partnership between the Smithsonian and St. Lucie County with regards to the St. Lucie County Marine Center – a 5,000-sqaure-foot public aquarium on South Hutchinson Island. The cast also had to opportunity to dive one of St. Lucie County’s artificial reefs and learn about the importance of restoring oyster reefs in the Indian River Lagoon with St. Lucie County’s Marine Resource Coordinator Jim Oppenborn.

From its first episode, Aqua Kids has been honored with numerous prestigious awards including: two Emmy Awards; nine Telly Awards (seven Bronze and two 25th Anniversary Gold awards); and two Videographer Awards (one award of Excellence and one of Distinction.).
