Employees from the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners personally donated $2,383 toward the Commissioners’ “Hope for Haiti” effort, which is being matched 100 percent by Van Scoyoc Associates, the County’s Federal lobbying firm in Washington, D.C. These funds will be donated to Missionary Flights International (MFI), a tenant at the St. Lucie County International Airport, to provide aid to those suffering from the massive earthquake that affected the country.

Additionally, about a ton and half of requested items, including food, hygiene supplies, and medical supplies, were collected by St. Lucie County employees and delivered by the County Utilities Department to the Missionary Flight hanger.

Established in 1964, Missionary Flights International is a private non-profit mission aviation service to Christian missions serving in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. MFI serves as a lifeline to the mission community and has made regular flights to Haiti for a long time. Since the Jan. 12 earthquake in Haiti, MFI has been collecting, packing and flying much needed supplies to missions in the Port-au-Prince area. The cost to send supplies via MFI’s DC-3 plane is roughly $10,000 per round-trip flight.

Residents are encouraged to make monetary donations or donate specific items to MFI from the list below:

  • Snack foods (granola bars, pretzels, crackers)
  • Baby formula and food
  • Cereal
  • Peanut butter
  • Blankets
  • Washcloths and towels
  • Personal hygiene products  (toothpaste, shampoo, diapers, etc)
  • First aid items (alcohol, peroxide, bandages)
  • Over the counter pain relievers
  • Flashlights and batteries
  • Please do not bring clothing at this time.

Donated items should be taken to 3170 Airman’s Drive, Fort Pierce, Fla. 34946, north off St. Lucie Boulevard at Hammond Road.  The hangar has a Missionary Flights sign on the outside.

Monetary donations can also be made online at www.missionaryflights.org/donate-now.
